Valley homes
Site-built homes
Most homes across Hidalgo and Cameron counties are single-story, on slabs. That is good news for aging in place. Hall baths often have standard alcoves that fit compact walk-in tubs or shower conversions.
Manufactured homes and RV parks
The Valley has many manufactured homes and parks, including communities that fill with seasonal "Winter Texans." Manufactured homes can have lighter floor framing, smaller bathrooms and narrow doors. A filled walk-in tub is heavy, so floor support has to be confirmed, and compact tubs or low-threshold showers are often the better fit. Ask about the park's rules for contractors too.
Heat, humidity and storms
- Humidity encourages mold. Use a vented exhaust fan, keep surround seams sealed, and dry the door gasket after each bath. The EPA suggests keeping indoor humidity under 60 percent.
- Hurricane season brings heavy rain, flooding and long outages. The tub's door, seat and gravity drain still work without power; jets, heaters and electric water heaters do not. Keep a battery light handy.
- Heat keeps incoming water warm much of the year, which helps tub fill temperature, but a small water heater can still run short on a deep tub.
Permits
McAllen, Edinburg, Mission, Pharr, Harlingen, Brownsville and other Valley cities each run their own permit offices. Unincorporated county addresses follow county and utility rules. Plumbing and electrical work requires licensed trades statewide.

For Winter Texans
If you split the year between the Valley and another state, think about which home needs the safer bathroom more, and who will be there for delivery and installation. A supply-only order can be scheduled around your arrival.
Before you call
Tell us whether the home is site-built or manufactured, the bathroom size, the drain end and the water heater size. If you are a seasonal resident, tell us your arrival and departure dates.
After a storm
If water gets into the bathroom, do not use jets, heated seats or in-line heaters until the wiring has been checked. Photograph any damage for insurance before cleanup.
Common questions
Can a walk-in tub go in a manufactured home?
