Answers are grouped loosely: money first, then installation, then daily use. Every answer is written to be accurate for Texas as of the date on this page. If a program changes, the agency's own page wins.
Before you read
Two facts shape most answers. First, Texas has no general contractor license but does license plumbers and electricians. Second, almost every funding program wants approval before work begins. Keep both in mind and you will avoid most common mistakes.
A note on safety claims
Lowering the step and adding a seat removes the riskiest moves from bath time, yet no bathroom can promise zero falls, and a tub is not therapy. Stand up slowly after warm water, towel your feet off first, and put a grippy mat where you step out. Federal health agencies offer free, practical fall-prevention checklists; read one alongside any remodel plan.
All questions
What should a Texan budget for a walk-in tub?
Fixr puts most installed projects in a band from $3,500 to $10,000; This Old House shows roughly $1,800 at the bottom and above $20,000 at the top. Your Texas quote depends on the tub, the bathroom and your location. See cost in Texas.
Will Medicare pick up the bill?
Generally no for Original Medicare, since a walk-in tub is not on its equipment list. A few Medicare Advantage plans add basic bathroom aids, but rarely structural work.
Can Texas Medicaid help?
Eligible STAR+PLUS members may receive minor home modifications, limited by the handbook to $7,500 per lifetime plus $300 a year for repairs. See STAR+PLUS.
What VA help exists for a bathroom?
Veterans who meet the rules may receive VA HISA grants of up to $6,800 or $2,000 depending on eligibility, and some for SAH or SHA grants. See help for veterans.
Are there Texas grants for accessibility?
TDHCA's Amy Young Barrier Removal Program offers one-time grants up to $22,500 for qualifying households with a person with a disability, through local administrators.
Who do I call for local senior help?
Your Area Agency on Aging, at 1-800-252-9240. Texas has 28 of them.
Does Texas license contractors?
There is no statewide general contractor license. Plumbers are licensed by the TSBPE and electricians by TDLR.
Do I need a permit?
It depends on your city or county and the scope. Drain moves, new circuits and opened walls usually need permits.
How many days does the work take?
Often a single day after delivery. Moving plumbing or running new circuits can add time.
Can I buy a tub without installation?
Yes. Supply-only tubs ship throughout Texas with phone tech support for your licensed installer.
Do walk-in tubs fit standard Texas bathrooms?
Plenty are sized for the common 60-inch alcove. Measure the alcove, the drain end and every door on the path in.
Will my water heater keep up?
Deep tubs need a lot of hot water at once. Check the heater size; options include a larger heater or an in-line tub heater.
What about hard water?
Common in much of Texas. Expect to clean scale from seals and jets, and consider a softener.
In a freeze or a blackout, what still works?
Without electricity you can still open the door, sit and drain by gravity; jets and heaters stop. Protect pipes from freezing as you would for any bathroom.
Is a shower better?
For wheelchair users or people who cannot lift a foot, a roll-in shower or transfer tub is often better. See tub or shower.
What tub brands are available?
Four lines: Ella's Bubbles, through Aging Safely Baths' dealership, plus Hydro Dimensions, Bestbath with its RANE line, and Meditub.
