What kinds of homes do we see around Corpus Christi?

The Coastal Bend covers the city of Corpus Christi plus Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Duval, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Live Oak, Refugio and San Patricio counties around it. Homes range from older single-story houses in the central city to newer subdivisions on the Southside, raised homes on Padre and Mustang islands, and farm and ranch houses inland near Alice, Beeville and Kingsville.

Single-story houses on slabs

Much of the city's housing is one story on a concrete slab. That is good news for aging in place, because there are no stairs to the bathroom. A slab does mean the drain location is fixed in concrete, so a tub or shower that needs its drain moved involves cutting the slab. We plan around the existing drain whenever we can, and our Texas homes and climate guide explains why that matters.

Raised and island homes

Homes on the islands and along the bays are often elevated. The bathroom may be easy to reach once inside, but getting a heavy tub up an outside stair takes planning. Measure every door and turn on the delivery path, not only the bathroom doorway.

Rural homes in the surrounding counties

Outside the city, many homes are on private wells and septic systems. A walk-in tub sends a large volume of water to the septic tank at once, and well pressure affects fill time. Our rural Texas guide covers both.

Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel in Corpus Christi?

Often, yes. The City of Corpus Christi Development Services homeowner permitting guide says a permit is required when you demolish a bathroom or kitchen, re-frame walls or remove drywall, and that plumbing permits are needed for work such as replacing a drain or vent, adding water lines or installing a water heater. Final inspections close out the permit.

  • Who can pull the permit: the guide says a Texas-licensed trade contractor can, or a homeowner doing their own plumbing, electrical or mechanical work on their homestead can apply for a homeowner trade permit. Gas line work is the exception and must be done by a state-licensed plumber.
  • Contractor registration: the city asks contractors to register. You can call Development Services at 361-826-3240 to confirm a contractor is registered.
  • Suburban cities and counties: Portland, Robstown, Rockport, Aransas Pass, Kingsville, Alice and others run their own permit offices. Unincorporated county addresses follow county rules.

State licensing applies everywhere: plumbing work needs a plumber licensed by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, and electrical work for a heater or pump needs a TDLR-licensed electrician. See Texas licensing and permits.

Why flood zones matter even for an inside job

Many Coastal Bend homes sit in mapped flood zones. Cities in the federal flood insurance program must track "substantial improvement," meaning projects whose cost reaches a set share of the building's value, and Corpus Christi's floodplain materials say the city counts improvements cumulatively. A single bathroom project rarely comes close on its own, but if your home is in a flood zone and you have other projects planned, ask Development Services how they will be counted before you start.

How does the drought affect a walk-in tub in Corpus Christi?

Water supply is a real local issue. The city says it was under Stage 3 drought restrictions from December 2024 until August 4, 2026, when it eased to Stage 2 after rain lifted reservoir levels; the city's Stage 1 FAQ, dated August 24, 2026, reflects a further easing to Stage 1. The stage can change again, so check the city's current stage before you plan.

The published restrictions we read focus on outdoor watering and businesses rather than indoor bathing, but a soaking tub still uses far more water per bath than a short shower. A few practical ideas for Coastal Bend households:

  • Choose the smallest tub that fits the bather comfortably. Interior volume varies a lot between models, and smaller tubs fill faster too.
  • Consider a combination: a low-threshold shower for daily washing and a tub only if soaking is part of a care plan.
  • Look at fill speed and water heater capacity together so you are not draining and refilling a tub that went cold.

Our tub or shower guide compares both. For barrier-free shower kits, pans and walls, see Showers4Less.

What is the Corpus Christi Minor Home Repair Program?

The city's Planning and Economic Development Department runs the Minor Home Repair Program with federal Community Development Block Grant money from HUD. According to the city's October 2025 FAQ, it provides grants of up to $24,999 for health and safety repairs, and accessibility modifications are on the list alongside roofing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and minor structural repairs. That round had about $889,079 to assist 35 homeowners, applications ran online from October 7 to October 21, 2025, and the city used a random lottery because it expected more requests than money.

Walk-in tub or shower: what works best on the coast?

For a bather who can step over a low threshold and sit down safely, a walk-in tub gives a seated, warm soak that many people with arthritis or stiff joints value. For someone who uses a wheelchair or cannot lift their legs over any threshold, a roll-in or low-threshold shower is usually the safer choice, and it is the option grant programs name most often. Coastal humidity favors a strong vented exhaust fan and well-sealed walls with either one.

Because water use and drought stages matter here, a shower with a seat and handheld sprayer is also the lighter choice on the water bill. If soaking is part of a care plan, choose a compact tub and pair it with a fast-recovery water heater.

Before you call

Note whether the home is inside Corpus Christi city limits or in another city, whether it is on a slab or raised, whether it is in a mapped flood zone, and whether the house is on city water or a well and septic. If a program such as the city grant, AYBR or the VA is involved, tell us so we can format the quote the way the program needs. For regional context, Aging Safely Baths also has a Texas walk-in tub and roll-in shower page, and the closest regional guides on this site are San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley.

Common questions

Which aging agency serves Corpus Christi?

The Area Agency on Aging of the Coastal Bend, at 2910 Leopard Street in Corpus Christi, serves Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Duval, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Live Oak, Nueces, Refugio and San Patricio counties. Call 361-883-3935 or the statewide line, 1-800-252-9240.

Does Corpus Christi have a grant for bathroom accessibility?

The city's Minor Home Repair Program has offered grants of up to $24,999 for health and safety repairs, including accessibility modifications, to low-income homeowners who are 62 or older, disabled, veterans or surviving veteran spouses. Applications open for short windows.

Do I need a permit to replace a tub in Corpus Christi?

The city's homeowner guide says demolishing a bathroom needs a permit, and plumbing permits cover drains, vents, water lines and water heaters. Homeowners can pull trade permits for their own homestead, except for gas work.

Where do Coastal Bend veterans ask about a HISA grant?

Through the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System, which has clinics in Corpus Christi. A VA provider documents the medical need and refers the request to Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service.

Does the drought mean I should not get a walk-in tub?

No, but it is worth planning for. A soaking tub uses more water per bath than a short shower, so choose a compact model, check the city's current drought stage, and consider a low-threshold shower for daily washing.

Do you install walk-in tubs in Corpus Christi?

Aging Safely Baths ships tubs supply-only throughout Texas with phone tech support, and coordinated installation depends on scheduling in the Coastal Bend. Call 1-888-779-2284 to confirm what is available at your address.
